Open Position: Research and Development Scientist Date Open: 01/07/2013     Requisition No. 2013-01 Location Kirkland, WA Status Exempt/Salaried; Full-time Reports To Optical & Electromagnetic Group Manager Travel Occasional, including international Education Advanced degree in physics or engineering preferred Experience EXPERIENCE / SKILLS REQUIRED: • Fundamental understanding of electromagnetics and optics • Laboratory experience with precision displacement sensors, positioning platforms, data acquisition hardware and software • Ability to design, construct and conduct laboratory experiments to assess the feasibility of new dimensional measurement products or features • An understanding of the concepts of signal-to-noise, accuracy, bandwidth, resolution, sensitivity, etc. • Analytical experience, including first-principles understanding of measurement systems and devices, computer modeling of measurement systems and devices, numerical methods, test data analysis • Excellent interpersonal skills.  Must be able to interact productively with coworkers and within a close-knit team to achieve tangible and practical work results • Excellent oral and written communication skills BENEFICIAL EXPERIENCE/SKILLS: • Finite element modeling experience in electromagnetics • Industrial experience in areas related to, or that make use of, dimensional metrology products • A working knowledge of linear and rotary encoders; components and operational principles • A solid understanding of capacitive, inductive and magnetic position sensors; theory of operation and practical application • Knowledge of Japanese language and business practices Duties & Responsibilities This is a mid-experience level development scientist position.  The person who fills this position will be part of an R&D team engaged in product-level innovation.  They will develop patentable, commercially viable technology for new products in the area of dimensional metrology and related industries. The New York University Global Academic Fellowship is a unique, prestigious Fellowship that provides the opportunity for high-performing recent college graduates or Master's candidates to spend 10 months providing academic support at one of our two portal campuses, NYU Abu Dhabi or NYU Shanghai. In addition to supporting students and faculty, Fellows contribute to Campus Life initiatives, Admissions events and individual scholarship. A $25,000 stipend, room and board, round-trip transportation and benefits included.

We seek talented Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics majors with an interest in teaching, working collaboratively with faculty and peers, and helping grow a new, unprecedented global university in Abu Dhabi or Shanghai.

Fellows are commonly taking a year between undergrad and grad school or med school to take part in this opportunity, although we also have Fellows who have already completed their Master's degree.

Fellows in the sciences typically support "Foundations of Science", a first and second year inter-disciplinary course designed to prepare our international student body for further study in the sciences and engineering. Fellows in math typically support first and second year math courses.

UW Environmental Innovation Challenge-Panel of Past Participants "Preparing for the EIC!"

Job Description:

 

Undergraduates in engineering and select science fields can earn money to finish their degree, with guaranteed follow-on employment after college.

 

Following graduation, you will attend Officer Candidate School to receive training on military discipline and Navy history, after which you will be commissioned as an Ensign in the Navy. As an officer in the Nuclear Propulsion program, you are a project manager overseeing the upkeep and repairs of a multi-billion dollar nuclear-powered engineroom. This involves technical training in reactor theory, mechanical systems, chemistry, and electrical instrumentation and control systems, amongst other topics. You will gain invaluable leadership and techincal experience, which will make you extremely competitive for hiring in the civilian sector afterwards.
