New Master of Applied Bioengineering program

The Master of Applied Bioengineering (MAB) integrates engineering design and entrepreneurship education to address unresolved clinical issues. MAB students will begin their 12-month program with a clinical preceptorship, during which they learn to identify unmet needs. The students will  gain the skills to design marketable solutions in the year-long biodesign series, and the program culminates in a summer.

This year we have a rolling application cycle beginning December 2015 for Autumn 2016 (late August) Admission. The Priority Application Deadline for domestic and international applicants is January 31, 2016. The Final Application Deadline is March 15, 2016. The MAB application materials can be found here.

Competitive candidates will have a B.S. or higher in an engineering, biological, physical or applied scientific discipline, strong academic performance, and academic background aligned with one of our technical concentration areas: Medical Imaging, Molecular Bioengineering and Biomaterials. We also expect students to have some experience in research or design, be self-motivated, and have evidence of good teamwork and communication skills. Group description:
The Advanced Undersea Systems and Technology Group works with the U.S. Navy and other sponsors within the Department of Defense (DoD) to perform rigorous systems analyses;  create new system architectures; and develop acoustic and non-acoustic multi-domain sensor concepts, autonomous capabilities, signal processing techniques, and  undersea networks and communication system concepts. This work addresses the DoD's increasingly important need to enhance its capabilities in surveillance and communications via undersea systems. The technical staff hold advanced degrees in electrical engineering, physics, applied mathematics, ocean engineering, and computer science. The group conducts parametric analysis, field testing, and data collection to prove new concepts and collaborates closely with other groups within the Air, Missile and Maritime Defense Technology Division and throughout the Laboratory.

For the full time staff, the job description is:
The Advanced Undersea Systems and Technology Group is in search of a candidate that is skilled at defining and evaluating technical approaches to solve problems important to the undersea domain. The group is considering candidates capable of contributing in several of the following areas: signal processing and detection, parameter estimation, model development for evaluating algorithms and undersea architectures, physics-based analysis and engineering assessment, and multi-domain prototyping.  Candidates must be able to work well within a team and collaborate with experienced technical staff to refine problem statements as well as work independently to perform analysis, develop candidate solutions, and implement methodologies to evaluate the utility of candidate solutions. Candidates must have strong interpersonal and communication skills.

For the summer interns, the job description is:
MIT Lincoln Laboratory's Advanced Undersea Systems and Technology Group seeks a summer intern to be involved in supporting development of advanced acoustic signal processing techniques. In particular,  the reassigned spectrogram (or time-corrected instantaneous-frequency spectrogram) is a spectral analysis tool often used to determine the precise instantaneous frequencies and associated times of occurrence of spectral components in an acquired signal of interest. It has been described in the literature as an effective method of analysis for, among other things, human speech, animal communications, and music. In this project, we would like to explore various aspects of the reassigned spectrogram including efficient implementations, display methods (specifically artifact removal/de-noising), and extensions to the analysis of other non-stationary signals.

Tenure Track Positions in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, University of Maryland, Baltimore County

UMBC’s Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering invites applications for three tenure-track Assistant Professor positions to begin in Fall 2016. Exceptionally strong candidates for higher ranks may be considered. Applicants must have or be completing a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline, have demonstrated the ability to pursue a research program, and have a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching. Candidates will be expected to build and lead a team of student researchers, obtain external research support and teach both graduate and undergraduate courses.

The Control Systems Lead (CSL) is responsible for providing Subject Matter Expert support within the 24x7 fulfillment center operations. The primary focus is on maintaining, advanced troubleshooting and modifying material handling equipment (MHE) control systems equipment to ensure operational performance of the MHE equipment including Conveyors, Sortation Systems, Hi Speed Scanners, Cameras, Print & Apply System and SCADA Devices & Programs.

Principle Duties & Responsibilities:
• Maintain, troubleshoot and modify PLC ladder logic for MHE systems including PLC/PC Controllers and industrial networks such as Ethernet, ControlNet, Device Net, Profibus, motor control systems,
•Servo drives, variable frequency drives and electrical distribution systems.
•Act as escalation support for the control systems technician team; appropriately escalate downtime situations to vendors or headquarters for support to restore equipment operation.
• Monitor MHE Metrics and partner with facilities/client operations teams to deploy system performance improvements within the fulfillment center
• Apply subject matter expertise in MHE and electronic systems to maximize equipment availability to production
• Perform and utilize fulfillment center system assessments to identify opportunities in improving utilization of systems/equipment.
•Partner with facility operations leadership, equipment vendors and parts suppliers to plan and coordinate new technology installations. Act as the technical consultant for capital projects within the building.
•Work within the cross site network to provide support and guidance for other fulfillment centers.
•May require the need to dial into other fulfillment centers and may require minimal travel.
•Communicate technical issues and project timeline with building leadership, operations and the maintenance team. Explain production impacts and work closely with operations and engineering to ensure a thorough understanding of impact to systems.
•Develop system documentation and Standard Work instruction for the operations team thus minimizing the risk of downtime caused by human error from the maintenance and operations team.
• Develop and/or maintain training documentation on relevant control systems. Provide training on control Systems to technicians.
• Develop maintenance procedures to maximize the usable life of assets and provide the greatest equipment availability to production

•Must have demonstrated recent experience using RSLogix 5000 to troubleshoot, program and modify PLC code. Lack of RSLogix5000 will disqualify the candidate for this role.
•Experience with Robotics systems components
•Ability to maintain, troubleshoot and modify program HMI components
•Ability to maintain, troubleshoot and modify the following: PLC failures, device failures, Robotics systems components, Control Network components, HMI components, Motor Controls and starters, VFD’s and standard electrical components
•Industrial electrical hands on experience and troubleshooting of 24VDC up to 480V 3phase systems.
•Experience and understanding of messaging protocols within a Warehouse Management System software as well as Warehouse Control Systems.
• Strong reasoning, analytical and problem solving skills
•Ability to Interpret and modify mechanical/electrical drawings and P&ID's
•Ability to identify, maintain and utilize SCADA Systems and KPI's
• Ability and willingness to train other employees with lesser skills

Space Remaining: Great 1-credit Research Exposed course!

Research Exposed! (GEN ST 391 D) offers undergraduates an opportunity to learn about current, exciting research in a wide variety of disciplines, including the process of discovery, how faculty come up with an idea for research, how inquiry is structured in the different disciplines, and how students can become involved in the knowledge-making process.

Presentations by UW faculty from diverse fields focus on their own cutting-edge research and how undergraduates can get involved in the knowledge-making process at this research university. Students attend weekly, fifty-minute discussions and have the opportunity to ask the speaker questions following each presentation. This course may be repeated for credit (1 credit/quarter-3 quarters max); speakers and topics will vary.

Part-Time Web Developer Sought for

Seeking part-time Web services application development help!  eSwing Golf Technologies, LLC ( is a WA startup company, based in West Seattle.  The company has developed and patented an electronic golf swing analyzer (called eSwing) that incorporates arrays of infrared and ultrasonic sensors to “see” the golf club head at ball impact during a golf swing.  These sensors accurately measure swing tempo, club speed, face angle and club path angle during the swing which are calculated within eSwing’s PIC micro-controller and displayed on eSwing’s LCD as immediate feedback for the player.  Hardware initialization and captured swing data are sent wirelessly (using Bluetooth LE communications) between eSwing’s hardware and an android mobile application to trigger and control eSwing’s sensors and firmware and to display captured swing data and ball flight trajectory on the mobile device.
eSwing’s current website has been developed in Parse.  Specific development help that we need to produce MVP features includes:
1.      Develop a Parse database that will link to the “My eSwing” navigation tab on eSwing’s website.
2.      Create tables and fields within the DB tables to save/access player records, player clubs, shot and transaction data.
3.      Develop website backend code to receive and save shot data packets sent into the cloud from the mobile app and to access and send saved data from within the DB that the mobile application requires.
4.      Create a couple of “basic” reports that will be available for players to access, replay and receive analytics and metrics from captured player swing data.

2D Material Enabled Nanophotonic Devices:
Job Description:
A student hired under this position will work closely with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows on optoelectronic devices from nanophotonic resonators and a new class of materials that are a single atom thick – 2D materials. The art of finding 2D materials is difficult and time consuming, but the rewards are great as these materials have unique properties that allow for nanowatt L.E.D.s, broadband absorption, amongst many other unique features.
