2016 Hydrogen Student Design Contest

The Hydrogen Education Foundation (HEF) is promoting the 2016 Hydrogen Student Design Contest: “Development of a Hydrogen Powered Microgrid for Grid Services and Back-Up.”  The Hydrogen Student Design Contest (www.hydrogencontest.org) is an annual competition supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, NREL, and industry since 2004.

This year’s contest will challenge students to design a hydrogen-powered microgrid capable of powering a town, military installation, port, or similar large facility for approximately 2 days, and be able to handle at least 10% of peak demand while the microgrid is active. The system should utilize local resources to produce and store hydrogen as well as provide hydrogen dispensing capabilities to hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs).

The top team(s) will receive a $5,000 stipend to attend the Department of Energy’s Annual Merit Review in Washington, DC to present their plan to a diverse audience of industry, academic, and government leaders, have their winning entry published in the IAHE International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, participate in a Department of Energy webinar, and have the chance to secure an internship with an industry sponsor.

Fundamentals for Startups Fridays, 2/5: Minimal Viable Product and How to Read a Financial Statement

The CoMotion Incubator has partnered with the Entrepreneurial Law Clinic (ELC) to bring you a workshop series called, Fundamentals for Startups Fridays! The topics for this Friday, 2/5/16: Minimal Viable Product with Scott Thielman and How to Read a Financial Statement with Tim Chou and Zach Parsons. Local entrepreneurs and law and business students from the ELC will provide special hands-on training, guidance, and answer questions on topics as they relate to your innovations.

Scott Thielman leads electronics technology and is charged with bringing products to life through integrated electronics and embedded software. Career highlights include leading a R&D team dedicated to improving the performance of a dental hand piece, designing a low flow-rate chiller system for a body contouring ultrasound device, and integrating a ZigBee chipset in a wireless networked product.

2016 Uplift Boeing IT Case Competition

Calling all technology student innovators
The ever-evolving field of technology is increasingly important across all of The Boeing Company’s operations—from commercial airplanes to defense and space. To tap into the next generation of IT leaders, Boeing sponsors the annual UpLift IT Case Competition—a technology-focused college case competition.

Teams of up to three students will work on a project from one of three categories:

• Contributing to the Eclipse Open System Engineering Environment
• Data Visualization
• Computer-Aided Technology Automation

We’re looking for enthusiastic college students from universities across the United States to compete in this year’s challenge. International Students Sought for Research Study

If you are adults aged 18 or over and hold a student visa (F-1/J-1) in the U.S., you are invited to participate in this research study! This research study is conducted by Patrick Pössel, Dr. rer. Soc. and Yu-Yun Liu, M.Ed. and sponsored by the University of Louisville, Department of Counseling and Human Development. The study will take place through an online survey. The purpose of this study is to research the associations between personality style, self-construals (e.g. in relation to others), and mood in international students. This study aims at adding more empirical evidence to the relationships between personality style and self-construals and proving implications for promoting the well-being of international students.

In this study, you will be asked to answer questions related to your personality styles, self-construals, recent life events, and your mood. In addition, you will be asked demographic questions (e.g., age, gender, country of origin, length of stay in the U.S., and intended degree). You will need about 30 minutes to answer all questions. You may decide not to answer any questions that make you uncomfortable.

Upon completing the survey, you will be given the opportunity to be entered in a drawing to receive a $50 gift card for your time, inconvenience, or expenses while you are in this study. Two participants will be selected randomly at the end of the study (approximately 3-6 months after the study begins). Taking part in this study is voluntary. You may choose not to take part at all. If you decide to be in this study you may stop taking part at any time. If you decide not to be in this study or if you stop taking part at any time, you will not lose any benefits for which you may qualify.

This study has been approved by the University of Louisville Institutional Review Board and the protocol number is 15.0395. Student Travel Grant Opportunity to IMS 2016 - Project Connect

I would greatly appreciate your help spreading the word among your undergraduate and first-year graduate students about IMS 2016 Project Connect.  Selected applicants to this program will receive up to U.S. $800 travel grants to attend the 2016 International Microwave Symposium on May 22-27, 2016 in San Francisco, CA. The goal of Project Connect is to provide students with an opportunity to participate in social and career development opportunities, which include: panel sessions with speakers from industry, government and academia with a special focus on entrepreneurship; assistance with effective resume writing and graduate school applications; and, most importantly exciting networking opportunities with the microwave community. Candidates should be members of under-represented groups in engineering.

Eligibility:

Undergraduate junior or senior level, or first year graduate student in engineering or a closely related discipline (e.g. math, physics, etc.). Candidates should be at least 18 years old and members of under-represented groups in engineering. For example, in the United States these groups include women, American Indian/Native, African American/Black and Hispanic American/Latino. There are no citizenship requirements.
