Reports To Optical & Electromagnetic Group Manager
Travel Occasional, including international
Education Advanced degree in physics or engineering preferred
Experience EXPERIENCE / SKILLS REQUIRED:
• Fundamental understanding of electromagnetics and optics
• Laboratory experience with precision displacement sensors, positioning platforms, data acquisition hardware and software
• Ability to design, construct and conduct laboratory experiments to assess the feasibility of new dimensional measurement products or features
• An understanding of the concepts of signal-to-noise, accuracy, bandwidth, resolution, sensitivity, etc.
• Analytical experience, including first-principles understanding of measurement systems and devices, computer modeling of measurement systems and devices, numerical methods, test data analysis
• Excellent interpersonal skills.  Must be able to interact productively with coworkers and within a close-knit team to achieve tangible and practical work results
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
BENEFICIAL EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:
• Finite element modeling experience in electromagnetics
• Industrial experience in areas related to, or that make use of, dimensional metrology products
• A working knowledge of linear and rotary encoders; components and operational principles
• A solid understanding of capacitive, inductive and magnetic position sensors; theory of operation and practical application
• Knowledge of Japanese language and business practices
Duties & Responsibilities This is a mid-experience level development scientist position.  The person who fills this position will be part of an R&D team engaged in product-level innovation.  They will develop patentable, commercially viable technology for new products in the area of dimensional metrology and related industries.
