Gen Studies 391 D: Research Exposed! - space available

There is still space available in our one-credit hour course, Research Exposed!  Research Exposed! (GEN ST 391 D) offers students an opportunity to learn about current, exciting research in a wide variety of disciplines, including the process of discovery, how faculty come up with an idea for research, how inquiry is structured in the different disciplines, and how students can become involved in the knowledge-making process.
Presentations by UW faculty focus on specific issues such as ethics and the culture of research. Students attend weekly, fifty-minute discussions and have the opportunity to ask the speaker questions following each presentation. This course may be repeated for credit (1 credit/quarter-3 quarters max); speakers and topics will vary.

Class meets every Wednesday from 12:30-1:20pm.

Washington Opportunity Scholarship -- Apply now!

Washington State Opportunity Scholarship (WSOS).

The scholarship helps low- and middle-income Washington State residents earn first bachelor's degrees in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) and health care. The application period is Jan. 7, 2013, through Feb. 18, 2013.  They will start notifying people about decisions on May 1, 2013.

They are looking for students who are traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields (students of color, first generation students, females, and low-income students) so all of you are in their target audience. The WSOS Board has increased the annual amount juniors and seniors will receive from $1,000 to $5,000.

Mary Gates Scholarships - now accepting applications

The Mary Gates Endowment for Students is currently accepting scholarship applications.  Mary Gates scholarships provide $4,000 ($2,000 per quarter for two quarters) for students to pursue leadership or research projects.  These scholarships benefit students in the current academic year, and are open to all UW undergraduate students regardless of class year, major or residency status.  Deadlines are coming up soon, so begin the application process and attend an information session and application workshop.

Soliciting Proposals for Exploration Technology Demonstration and National Lab Utilization Enhancements

Attention College and University Students!

 

Conduct research in space and make new discoveries! The adventure begins in 2013. The ISS NASA Education Projects Office is now accepting proposals from higher education institutions or consortia of organizations serving higher education that are interested in conducting research in space and have concepts for flight experiments or demonstrations that utilize a microgravity environment and can be conducted in a ‘1 unit’ (1U) NanoRacks NanoLab.

 

Proposal requirements:

·         Must align with space station program research priorities in technology, biology, biotechnology, and physical sciences

·         Must address innovative, meaningful, and enduring research and technology development activities with STEM –based context

White papers must be submitted on January 23, 2013 by 4 p.m. (CST). Full proposals must be submitted on February 20, 2013 by midnight (CST).

Gain Experience and Make a Difference

The University of Washington Academic Support Program is offering a service-learning seminar titled “EDUC 401: Tutoring and Mentorship in Higher Education” for Winter Quarter 2013. This weekly seminar will introduce junior and senior students to a diverse range of tutoring, mentoring, and teaching methodologies. Students will have an opportunity to apply what they learn in class through tutoring and mentoring new transfer, freshman, and sophomore students who are transitioning socially, culturally, and academically to the University of Washington. This is a great opportunity for seasoned students to give back to the University by sharing their knowledge and experience with new students who are working to become independent learners.

·         Seminar begins 1^st  week of Winter Quarter,  January 7^th, 2013

·         Seminar will meet on Mondays from 3-4:20 PM or from 5:30-6:50PM

·         Tutoring will take place on campus

·         Receive 3 credits for working with two students or 2 credits for working with one student

·         A letter of recommendation will be available upon request after completion of the seminar

This program was launched by the Graduate School of Science (GSS) of the University of Tokyo (one of the world's leading research-education universities) as part of its campaign begun in June 2010 for promoting the internationalization of the GSS by inviting talented young students from abroad. UTRIP is an intensive summer research program targeted at undergraduates who have a keen interest in pursuing an M.S. or Ph.D. degree in the future. During the program, the participants receive intensive instruction and guidance on conducting research from renowned faculty members belonging to the GSS's six departments of physics, astronomy, chemistry, earth & planetary science, biophysics & biochemistry, and biological sciences. The program is open to students who are currently enrolled in their junior or senior years at an accredited college or university outside of Japan, and who are majoring in a natural science or related field. Students participating in the program who are highly evaluated by the faculty members will be given priority for receiving scholarships when applying for admission to the GSS the following year. The program also includes an excursion outside of Tokyo as well as a short course on the Japanese language and culture.
