Communicating Science to the Public Effectively
ASTR 599B (sln 21050)
Autumn 2011
2 credits (Credit/No Credit)

Meets Mondays 2:30-5:20 in Benson 115

In this course, students will
- develop and practice several analogies to distill their research
- create a variety of concise research promoting statements
- practice story-telling and ways of connecting with the public
- learn improvisation, acting games and lessons
- engage in weekly readings and discussions
- hear from guest speakers on science communication

At the end of the quarter, each student will produce a 30 minute
public talk to be delivered during the winter quarter’s Engage: The
Science Speaker Series.

Research Exposed! (GEN ST 391 D) offers an opportunity to learn about current, exciting research in a wide variety of disciplines. Each week a different UW faculty member will speak on issues such as ethics and the culture of research. Students attend weekly, 50-minute class sessions and have the opportunity to ask the speaker questions following each presentation. This course may be repeated for credit (3 quarters max). Speakers and topics will vary each quarter.

the next-generation Intel CPUs. Typical responsibilities span Circuit
design (or Analog design), logic design, chip planning, synthesis,
functional/electrical design verification and test development.

Requirements for the position include a B.S.(GPA >3.2) or M.S. (GPA >3.5) in
electrical/computer engineering or equivalent. Strong fundamental skills in
digital hardware design, VLSI circuit design, MOS Devices and Computer
architecture are required. Good programming skills will be an advantage.

Hardware Engineer Position with XKL, Kirkland

HARDWARE DESIGN ENGINEER I

Under the direction of the Engineering Hardware Manager, assist in the development of one or more of XKL's high performance networking products. The position requires the ability to perform (but is not limited to) the following:

• Simulate and verify logic using VHDL per the system architecture for use in gate arrays (FPGAs)
• Develop PCB schematics including design of support circuitry
• Assist with technical specifications, including performance, power consumption, etc.
• Develop and implement bring-up/test plans
• Team Player with good communication skills

The position requires a candidate with a B.S in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.

Background in the following would be a plus:

• VHDL synthesis, Test Benching, TCL scripts
• Experience designing high speed digital logic circuits including the use of FPGAs and high performance memories
• Processor Design
