Urban agriculture suffers from wet and short growing seasons.

To promote food supply sustainability, the competition inspires new designs and ideas for greenhouses of the future.

Students of, and professionals in, the architecture, engineering, construction, environmental and food growing industry

compete for cash prizes.

Winners will be announced at the Living Future Conference in Seattle, May 15 – 17^th, 2013.

Mary Gates Scholarships - info sessions this week!

The Mary Gates Endowment for Students is currently accepting scholarship applications.  Mary Gates scholarships provide $4,000 ($2,000 per quarter for two quarters) for students to pursue leadership or research projects.  These scholarships benefit students in the current academic year, and are open to all UW undergraduate students regardless of class year, major or residency status.  Deadlines are coming up soon, so begin the application process and attend an information session and application workshop.

Develop your undergraduate CV/Resume for use in scholarship, fellowship, research opportunities, and graduate school applications! A Curriculum Vitae ("CV" or "vitae") is a comprehensive, biographical statement emphasizing your professional qualifications and activities. A CV is similar to a resume, but an advantage to the CV format is the significant freedom to choose the headings and categories for your information and the strength reflected in their arrangement.
Bring a working draft, such as an existing resume, and a list of activities including: Honors, Awards & Prizes received no longer than 5 years ago, Academic and Research Activities, Community Service Involvement, Work History, and Activities outside of the Academic Environment. In this workshop you will have the opportunity to work with Office of Merit Scholarships, Fellowships & Awards staff to develop and strengthen a draft of your CV!

Applying for scholarships, internships, and graduate/professional programs often requires a personal statement or application letter. This type of writing requires you to outline your strengths confidently and concisely, which can be challenging.

Personal Statement Workshops will provide students with essential information to develop an understanding of not only writing about their interests, eligibility and suitability for applications, but also to learn how their statements provide evidence of their achievements that aren’t reflected in other parts of an application.

Tillman Military Scholars Program

Applications due Feb. 15! UW information sessions Jan. 16, 17, 22!

The mission of the Pat Tillman Foundation is to invest in military veterans and their spouses through educational scholarships; building a diverse community of leaders committed to service to others. This is accomplished with the Tillman Military Scholars (TMS) program which purpose is to identify high-impact active or veteran servicemembers and their spouses and invest in their higher education, covering the needs left unpaid for by the GI Bill and other government support. The scholarship funds awarded are just a portion of the TMS experience which also focuses on guiding an engaged community and providing essential resources that empower Scholars to serve and lead in their local communities and ease the transition from military to civilian life.

In 2013, the Pat Tillman Foundation will provide over $1 million in funding to the 60 members of the 5th class of Tillman Military Scholars. The Tillman Military Scholars application will open on Monday, January 14. The deadline for applications is 11:59:59 PM PST on Friday, February 15.

2013 NASA / Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) REU application

I am pleased to announce the launch of the 2013 NASA / Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) application. It is online and available at http://www.APLapp.com.
Since 2004, the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) has offered summer projects to students interested in working on NASA missions or space-related research opportunities at APL. Students participating in the NASA/APL Internship Program will work at APL, and will make critical contributions to current and future missions or grants during their assignments in the Space Department. The Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is a not-for-profit center for engineering, research and development. APL is a division of one of the world's premier research universities, Johns Hopkins. 2013 NASA Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)

The 2013 Washington NASA Space Grant Consortium - SURP application is now open for application, details may be found at the following link: http://www.waspacegrant.org/for_students/student_internships/wsgc_internships/SURP_for_students.html
SURP is a paid 9 week STEM summer research experience for University of Washington and Space Grant Consortium eligible undergraduates. The full-time internship pay is $4,000 and part-time positions are paid at the $2,000 level. Space Grant co-funds internships with hiring labs and aims to match SURP selected students with a lab working on projects that are closely related to the students' interests. Space Grant also provides co-funding for SURP selected students who have prearranged to work in a STEM lab during the summer.

Due to the intentionally small size of our event, students will have an opportunity to network with a select group of companies and learn about upcoming job and internship opportunities.

Following the Career Fair, HKN is hosting their annual Poker Night which will take place directly after the Career Fair and is an opportunity to socialize with other students, faculty and employersin a lively, non-traditional atmosphere. This informal setting serves as a place where students can feel comfortable asking potential employers more in-depth questions about the company’s interests and operations, and vice versa. In past years, Poker Night has resulted in many students receiving either a job offer following the completion of their degree, or obtaining an internship in a field of their interest. Throughout the night, door prizes will be raffled to students, which are generously donated by the companies in attendance.
