The Washington Center (TWC) runs a full-time internship program in Washington, D.C. that is open to all UW students and provides comprehensive service, including internship placement and housing. Placements include government agencies, corporations, nonprofits and international organizations. Hundreds of UW students have participated in this program since UW's affiliation in 1977, and many have made connections that led to post-degree employment.
At the informational meetings, a Washington Center representative and I will discuss the program, scholarships and the application process.
For 2011 the quarterly program cost is $5,650 and the housing cost is $3,660. In addition, students pay UW registration, transportation, and personal expenses. Students may use financial aid for this program, UW tuition is charged at a reduced rate, and students may apply for scholarships (many UW students receive scholarships of $3000).

Note that some established internship programs, such as the Congressional Black Caucus, may require earlier application submissions than the deadlines noted above.

Barry M Goldwater Scholarship -- Campus Deadline Tuesday, November 2, 2010
Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship:
The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship was created to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. The awards will be distributed on the basis of merit. The University of Washington is eligible to nominate up to four outstanding candidates who are of sophomore or junior standing during the 2011-2012 academic year.
To be considered for campus nomination, a student must:
1. Be a full-time matriculated sophomore or junior pursuing a degree at an accredited institution of high education during the 2011-2012 academic year. Sophomores are eligible to receive up to two years of funding.
2. Have a college grade-point average or at least a"B" (or the equivalent) and be in the upper fourth of his or her class.
3. Be a United States citizen, a permanent resident, or a United States national. Nominations from permanent residents must include a letter of the nominee'ss intent to obtain U.S. citizenship and a photocopy of the Permanent Resident Card.
4. UW students must have a minimum of three quarters of research experience and a minimum grade-point average of 3.5.
Applications for this years' campus nominations are available online via the Goldwater Website. Students must submit the completed application, including essay and list of three to five faculty who are familiar with your work and you prospects and would be willing to write a letter of recommendation if you are selected. A faculty committee reviews application materials and four finalist are nominated for the national competition.

This position is for Weyerhaeuser's Liquid Packaging Board business, which produces bleached paperboard used to make cartons and cups for liquids such as milk, juice, coffee and sake under the brand name Structure-Pak. This business produces 260,000 metric tons of paperboard each year -- the equivalent of 6 billion liter-sized milk cartons. This facility began operations in Longview, WA in 1953 and employs about 500 people.
A Manufacturing Associate is assigned to a manufacturing site for 18 to 24 months on a full time temporary basis. During that period, the Associate receives a comprehensive orientation to Weyerhaeuser and its Pulp and Paper business, performs assignments in most areas of the mill and receives training as determined by site and business mentors. Successful completion of the program normally leads to a full time regular manufacturing position within the Manufacturing Business.
These particular positions are open in the Longview, WA Liquid Packaging Mill. This is an excellent professional development opportunity. Requirements include:
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil/Structural, Industrial, or Chemical Engineering; Bioresource/Paper Science & Engineering; Other related disciplines. Must graduate by June, 2011.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills along with a technical writing capability.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work within a team environment.
- Well developed problem solving and analytical skills.
- High level of initiative and motivation.
- Excellent planning and organizational skills.
· Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.

Associate roles and responsibilities may include: Resolving a manufacturing issue by leading a mill trial (writing the trial plan, coordination, data analysis, communicating of results and report writing); Facilitating and/or leading small group problem solving activities to identify root cause of a mill problem; Participation in capital or maintenance project team; Maintaining level of preservation of mill infrastructure; Assisting mill process owners in optimizing process economics and process controls; Working with team development managers to improve team performance; Other duties/projects may be assigned or required as needed.
