Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) - Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) Spring 2015

Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship
Where Undergraduates Learn About Scientific Research by Doing Scientific Research

About the Program

In response to the growing concern about the decreasing numbers of U.S. citizens obtaining degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science sponsors the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI). This program provides special training and research experiences to undergraduate students at the DOE National Laboratories. SULI enables students to pursue technical careers and advanced educational
opportunities by giving them direct exposure to major scientific research facilities and to the Laboratory’s scientific and technical staff.

Program Components

Participating students receive a weekly salary, a hous- ing allowance, and travel expenses. They spend either ten weeks in the summer or 16 weeks during the fall/spring semester at a DOE National Laboratory where they:
  • Are matched with world-renowned scientists who serve as mentors
  • Are trained to use advanced scientific instruments
  • Develop professional and technical communication skills
  • Attend seminars and lectures on scientific inquiry and recent discoveries
  • Complete a research project which is formally documented in a paper and presentation.

Eligibility

Students for SULI are recruited from all undergraduate institutions and must:
  • Be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student
  • Be interested in a career in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics
  • Be 18 years or older at the start of the program
  • Be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien
  • Have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher.

Financial Information

A salary of $500/week is provided as well as a housing per diem and travel reimbursement per DOE and PNNL program guidelines.
