Senior Engineer or Below (DOE) # 4221

Substation Engineering Controls Group

PSE is looking for a senior engineer who has prior experience in substation controls engineering applied to transmission, distribution, and generation systems within a combined electric/gas utility environment.

The Senior Engineer will be responsible to perform advanced engineering design and analyses to support construction, operation and maintenance activities associated with control systems for substations, SCADA, and automated T&D systems. Types of work will include preparation of controls design drawings (schematic and wiring diagrams), calculations for determining correct capacity of storage batteries, preparation of detailed cost estimates, material lists, plans for construction and renovation of substation facilities. The senior engineer will work closely with the System Protection engineering group and others on the project team in order to ensure accurate and timely work products. The senior engineer may be used to oversee the work of junior members of the group and support the continued development of PSE’s engineering workforce by sharing knowledge with others. This position allows you to exercise considerable latitude in determining the technical objectives of an assignment. Typical assignments are broad in scope, and may be composed of interrelated elements within and outside of the employees’ core area of expertise. This position will also be called upon to support emergency response operations when needed from the department.

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. Demonstrated experience as a Senior Engineer (5 to 7+ years) with competence in the controls engineering discipline.
  • Experience in preparation of control equipment specification, meter/relay one line diagrams, design review, analysis of electrical systems and operations.
  • Ability to apply engineering economic principles and manage multiple assignments concurrently.
  • Demonstrated effective communications, both verbal and written.
  • Familiarity with MS Office/basic computer skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership through effective participation within department and project team environments.

Desired:

  • State of Washington Professional Engineer’s License.
  • Broad knowledge of industry standards/best practices, leading edge technological developments, and field engineering practices.
  • A basic knowledge of electrical power system relay protection principles.
  • Organization, documentation, prioritization, and project engineering skills.
  • Experience in project cost estimating or scheduling

This position will be filled as an Engineer or Associate Engineer depending upon the qualifications of the selected applicant.
