The College of Engineering Early
Engineering Institute is seeking undergraduate students to fill the temporary
(hourly) staff positions of Group Leader/Tutor. The dates of employment will
run 7/30-8/6, (including training dates). The purpose of this position is to
provide academic and recreational supervision to high school students, and
assistance to instructors and presenters. Group Leaders will live on campus in
the residence halls with Early Engineering Institute students. Meals will be
provided in addition to compensation. **See also Math Academy Group Leader

Program Overview:
The Early Engineering Institute
(EEI) is a 4-day summer program for incoming 10th and 11th grade students with
the goals of:
• Increase students’ math and problem solving skills
• Prepare students for applying to college
• Increase students’ interest in science, technology, engineering, and math
• Increase students’ knowledge of engineering fields and career options
• Increase students’ awareness and understanding of careers in STEM
• Increase students’ confidence through self-exploration, leadership and confidence building activities
The ultimate goal of EEI is to increase the diversity of students successfully completing engineering degrees and entering the STEM workforce. University of Washington engineering faculty and staff teaching mathematics workshops recognize that a strong foundation in algebra skills enhance students’ performance in engineering, math, and science courses.
The Group Leader/Tutor will be responsible for providing: supervision, mentorship and leadership to students during program activities; and instructional and programmatic assistance to presenters and staff.
Summary of qualifications:
• Enthusiasm for and appreciation of the field of engineering
• Previous experience working with children, teenagers, or students required; tutoring experience a plus
• Engineering, and pre-engineering students strongly preferred; all related science, technology, and math majors also encouraged to apply
• Comfort with serving as an authority figure essential; Demonstrated leadership skills
• Experience and interest in working with diverse groups/minority students
The specific duties of this individual would be to:
• Lead, supervise and engage with students during presentations, classes, meals, and activities
• Help presenters, instructors and students with engineering /math projects, presentations and activities
• Assist/lead the organization, supervision, and facilitation of recreational activities
Additional Duties may include:
• Media coverage of program activities including photos and video
• Creating and facilitating engineering activities, tours, leadership activities, social events, etc.
• Other duties as assigned
Work Schedule & Compensation: 9am-2pm (training) on 7/30 & 7/31; 11am-10:30pm on 8/3; 8am-10:30pm on 8/4; 8am-10:30pm on 8/5 and 7am-5pm on 8/6. Hourly compensation, free meals, free housing, and great work experience!
