University Disciplinary Committee Request

Greetings, UW Students-

The Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct is currently seeking new student members for the University Disciplinary Committee (UDC).  The University Disciplinary Committee is comprised of students and faculty who hear disciplinary cases on behalf of the University. Students who have allegedly violated the Student Conduct Code can appear before the University Disciplinary Committee or may choose to have an informal hearing with a Community Standards and Student Conduct Hearing Officer.  Additionally, the UDC hears appeals of cases in which a student may have been found responsible for a violation of the code but the student disagrees with the initial finding or sanctions.

New student members will begin their one-year term in February 2016 and will complete their term at the end of December 2016. In order to serve on the University Disciplinary Committee, students must be enrolled full-time (either undergraduate or graduate) and be in good academic standing. Additionally, students must be able to commit to meeting as a committee 3-5 hours per month and should be interested in gaining leadership skills through serving on this University Wide Committee.
Students are selected at random from those students who identify an interest in the University Disciplinary Committee and then training is provided for those selected. This year’s first required training for all new UDC members will be held during Winter quarter in February and details will be provided to selected students.

If you are interested in submitting your name for random selection of students to serve on the UDC, please email me directly at jadraper@uw.edu. In your email, please include your name, major, college or school, and year in school. This is the only information I need prior to randomly selecting students. The deadline to submit your name for random selection is 5pm on Friday, January 15, 2016. Students will be notified via email whether or not they have been selected by Tuesday, January 19, 2016.

Purple Heart Dash 2015

My name is Wesley Pond with the Naval ROTC unit at UW. We wanted to make sure that we notified all UW departments of our upcoming charity 5k called the Purple Heart Dash. It will be held at the university, and will be in conjunction with the University's Veteran's appreciation week. The cost is $20 for UW students and employees.
Our objective in hosting this event is two-fold. A portion of the proceeds that we receive as entry fees will be donated to the Semper Fi Fund who supports the families and service members who have been affected by severe, service induced injuries. They offer services such as financial assistance, rehabilitation, counseling, and more. For more information about the Semper Fi Fund and their programs and activities click HERE. A portion of the proceeds from this race will also go to Compass & Chart, the registered student organization responsible for hosting the event. Compass & Chart is comprised of Naval ROTC Midshipmen, Marines, and Sailors who wish to be more involved in community relations and promote our respective services. All money retained by Compass & Chart will be used in covering expenses for next year's race.

For more information on the event you can check out the Purple Heart Dash 5K Facebook Page, or visit our Registration page.

Volunteer Opportunity - Language & Culture

Do you want to become involved in an international community?
Would you like to practice your foreign language skills or develop cross-cultural experience?
Volunteer with the Language Exchange Program!
The UW International and English Language Programs (UW IELP) is a program which provides English language instruction to international students from a variety of nations/across the globe! We work hard to connect our students with the UW community and others in the greater Seattle area.
We offer 3 great volunteer opportunities to develop global citizenship, improve language skills, and connect people!
Conversation Partner
We match IELP students with students, faculty, staff, and alumni of UW to participate in a language exchange. A pair can either spend half the time speaking in English and the other in a language of their choice, or speak the whole time in English – what we call a “cultural exchange”. The majority of our students speak Arabic, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. We also have many participants who are not learning another language but wish to gain insight into a different culture and meet others.
This is an excellent opportunity to make new friends, learn, practice another language, and share culture.
Classroom Volunteer
These volunteers attend an IELP class once a week to assist teachers by providing conversation practice. This is a great opportunity to familiarize oneself with teaching English as a second language and classroom learning.
Activities and Events
All volunteers will be regularly invited to attend activities and events (such as ice-skating, a tour at the Ballard Locks, or bowling at the HUB) throughout the quarter.
If you are interested in this opportunity, please sign up online at  https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/langex/279133

For more information, please use this link: http://www.ielp.uw.edu/student-life/activities/language-exchange/

UW Science Explorers - STEM outreach opportunity

Hi everyone,

Hope your quarters are off to a wonderful start! I'm writing to send you an exciting outreach opportunity. For the past couple years, I've been working with a graduate student organization called Science Explorers.  We are a graduate student organization that does science enrichment at a local elementary school, Sanislo Elementary school and we're currently looking to recruit more volunteers and leaders for our team!

We do fun weekly science and engineering lessons, everything from static electricity balloons to hydraulic robots. This is a wonderful way to give back to the community and meet graduate students in other departments (and it looks great on NSF applications)!

We'll have an orientation session on Wednesday, October 7th at 2:00 in the MolES 1st floor conference room, if you want to learn more about this opportunity. Please come or email sdrao@uw.edu if you're interested! We're always interested in recruiting more graduate students so please spread the word to your friends as well!

UW EcoCar3 Modeling and Simulation Recruitment

The UW EcoCAR3 System Modeling and Simulation (SMS) team is currently recruiting new members. The EcoCAR3 competition is a 4 year project in which 16 universities completely redesign a 2016 Chevrolet Camaro to improve the energy consumption and efficiency. Heading into year 2 of the competition, the SMS sub team will be focused on Hardware-in-Loop testing to validate the controls architecture of the vehicle.

The SMS team will be working on 3 major projects in year 2: SoftECU development, HIL model development, and test case development. By the end of the year the SMS team will have built a full vehicle model capable of supporting Software-in-Loop and Hardware-in-Loop testing. SoftECU's will have been emulated to replicate CAN communication and primary operating modes for integrated testing of the vehicle's controls network. Lastly, test cases will be defined and developed to allow manual and automated testing of controls functionality.

The UW EcoCAR3 SMS team is an exciting opportunity. Modeling and simulation is critical in all areas of engineering and is a rapidly growing field as it allows efficient and cost effective validation of systems. To apply please visit uwecocar.com. Applicants are expected to have prior experience with modeling, controls simulation, or test development. Member must have the ability to commit a minimum of 12 hours a week to the team.

info session for Batman's Kitchen: Computer Security

We are Batman’s Kitchen, the UW competition team, and we are looking for new members!

Interested in learning about computer security issues and/or being part of a competition team?  We hold regular meetings, practice breaking/hacking stuff, learn about the latest security topics, and compete in CTF
competitions throughout the year.  You don't need any prior experience to join the team -- all you need is an interest in security and/or CTFs plus a willingness to learn.  Our group is an interdisciplinary group of students from CSE, EE, iSchool, pre-engineering, and other UW departments.  We collaborate with the other two UW branches (Tacoma and Bothell) and organizations/companies in the Seattle area.

Our Info Meeting is next Tuesday, October 6th, CSE building rm691, at 6:00pm.  We welcome everyone.  At the Info Meeting we'll talk about the topics we'll cover in the coming year (e.g., lockpicking, IoT, privacy, etc.), the type of competitions we do, hands-on labs, local hacker groups, and Puget Sound resources.

Even if you can't make it to the meeting, sign up for our mailing list at
https://mailman.cs.washington.edu/mailman/listinfo/uwctf, check out our website at http://uwctf.cs.washington.edu, or drop by the Societies Fair on October 8th at 3:30-6p in Maple Hall to talk with some of our members.  If you have any questions, email me and I can tell you more.
