EE 567 - Wireless Networks/3G/4G/LTE - Fall 2015

2G, 3G, 4G, LTE, 802.11, ... what are these, and what is next?

Find the answers to these and more in EE 567, offered this fall! (SLN 13422, MW 1230-220)

EE 567 this year will focus on fundamentals of cellular and wireless communication. We will discuss different concepts in cellular communications such as frequency reuse, propagation, multiple access, power control, handover, and traffic shaping and control.

After covering the underlying theory, we will look at two major systems in 2G including GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) and IS-95 (or CDMA One). We will cover their historical development and limitations. With the goals of achieving higher data rates and more reliable data communications, we lead to a discussion of higher generation systems such as GPRS (2.5G), EDGE, and then 3G technologies such as CDMA2000 and WCDMA.

Wireless area networks (802.11 variations) and Bluetooth will also be covered.

Finally, we will talk about LTE and consider technologies for fifth generation networks coming online in the near future.

Prerequisites for the course are a basic understanding of digital communications and networks at the level of EE 506 and EE 565, or equivalent.

This will be an exciting course, a mix of theoretical foundations, and practical systems in use today. I hope you can join us.

2015 KICKBALL IS HERE!!

The College of Engineering will be hosting another summer season of kickball beginning Thursday, August 6 @ noon. We invite you to form teams consisting of staff, faculty, and students to participate in this fun tournament! The rules will be similar as last year’s; please see attached for details.

Please use this link to sign-up captains by department and choose your team’s color. Teams will need at least 8 players to participate, and they can be any combination of students, faculty, and staff. Not on a team? Be a floater! Also, if you would like to participate, but don’t want to play, please consider being a timekeeper/umpire. It is important that we have both these roles filled or else games can’t happen; sign-up using the link above.

The games will be held Thursdays between noon and 1 pm, with games lasting 30 minutes each. Games will be held on the upper Rainier Vista lawn.

Friendly competition between Departments is encouraged; unfriendly competition is discouraged!

There will be an awesome end-of-season celebration with food and beverages so stay tuned for details! Kickball was a blast last summer, let’s do it again this year!
The three coordinators for this tournament are Robin Donovan (robind3@uw.edu), Alex Llapitan (alex310@uw.edu) and Scott Rivers (srivers@uw.edu). Contact one of us with questions.
