Speaker Bio:  Dr. Kevin P. Schneider (S’00, M’06, SM’08) received his B.S. degree in Physics and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington. His main areas of research are distribution system analysis and power system operations. He is currently a staff research engineer at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, working at the Battelle Seattle Research Center in Seattle Washington. Dr. Schneider is an Adjunct Faculty member at Washington State University, an Affiliate Assistant Professor at the University of Washington, and is a licensed Professional Engineer in Washington State. He currently serves as the Chair for the IEEE Distribution System Analysis Sub-Committee.

The Mary Gates Endowment for Students is currently accepting scholarship applications.  Mary Gates scholarships provide $4,000 ($2,000 per quarter for two quarters) for students to pursue leadership or research activities.  These scholarships benefit students in the current academic year, and are open to all UW undergraduate students regardless of class year, major or residency status.  Deadlines are coming up soon, so begin the application process, attend an information session, and register for an application workshop.

Info Session for Batman's Kitchen

We are Batman’s Kitchen, the UW competition team, and we are looking for new members.

Interested in learning about computer security issues and/or being part of a competition team?  We hold regular meetings, practice breaking/hacking stuff, learn about the latest security topics, and compete in CTF/hacker jeopardy competitions throughout the year.  You don't need any prior experience in security to join the team -- all you need an interest in CTFs and/or security plus a willingness to learn.  Our group is an interdisciplinary group of students from CSE, EE, iSchool, pre-engineering, and other UW departments.  We also collaborate with the other two UW branches (Tacoma and Bothell).

Our Info Meeting is next Wednesday, October 1^st, CSE room 691, at 6:00pm.  We welcome everyone.  At the Info Meeting we'll talk about the type of competitions we do, topics we'll cover in the coming year (e.g., lockpicking, bitcoin, etc.), and about local hacker groups and hands-on labs.

Google Translate Tech Talk on Sept 30th

Google is providing a tech talk coming up next week on Tuesday, September 30th (International Translation Day) from 6-8pm in EEB 125 where they will be talking about cool stuff happening at Google Translate.

Students interested in a mix of EE/CE/CS - are invited - along anyone with an interest in Google and programming. This talk will be geared towards a CS/CE crowd simply from the nature of the company and what the Google Translate team works on, but they would love to extend the invite to EE's with an interest/major concentrations in this area.

Career Opportunities at AFRL Infomation Directorate

The Information Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is looking for outstanding researchers to address cutting-edge computing and communications problems vital to the nation's security. AFRL is a basic and applied research laboratory that has been supporting the US Air Force for more than 60 years. The AFRL Information Directorate employs approximately 750 scientists and engineers, and is the Air Force's center of expertise for R&D of command, control, communications, computers, intelligence (C4I) technologies. Work is conducted across a broad spectrum of technologies in areas such as information fusion, communications, modeling and simulation, and high performance and intelligence information systems. The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art resources in a number of dedicated facilities including a High-performance Computing Center which houses the DoD's largest interactive supercomputer, an advanced RF Technology Center, Quantum Computing and Communication Labs, a SATCOM facility, and two large-scale outdoor antenna test ranges. Using these resources AFRL develops new ways to provide commanders with accurate, timely information.
Emphasis areas for open technical staff positions include high-performance and trusted computing hardware/software, quantum computers, nano and neuromorphic computers, advanced high-bandwidth adaptive digital communications, data link and waveform development, networking technologies, assured-access communications, satellite communications, and free-space optical communications including quantum key distribution. Members of the technical staff have diverse backgrounds including electrical & computer engineering, computer science, physics, and mathematics.
BS, MS, and PhD holders in these fields are sought. AFRL Information Directorate staff members have been at the forefront of information science and technology developments. Examples include basic and applied R&D in photonic quantum computing, multi-Gbps RF and optical communications, and networked communications for Unmanned Aerial Systems in contested environments. Staff members work on multi-disciplinary in-house teams. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate depth in advanced computing and communications, via self-motivation and collaborative efforts. The Dream Project is a student-run organization with over 400 mentors that support high school students in low-income areas in Seattle on applying to college and other post-secondary planning.

• Mentor students on the crazy process that is college admissions & beyond!
• You can take it for 2 credits or volunteer. For credit, register for EDUC 260 and EDUC 369 on your UW registration. To volunteer without earning credit, sign up here.
• Lecture (EDUC 260) is on Mondays from 3:30-4:20 or 5:30-6:20 and covers important content related to the college application process, mentorship strategies, and social justice. Counts for I&S credit.
• High School visits (EDUC 369) take place throughout the week at various times. There is also a high school breakout on Mondays
• Transportation to the 16 different partner schools around the area is PROVIDED!
• Meet awesome undergrads, find leadership opportunities, and make new friends!
• Average commitment of 4-6 hours per week.
