Working in higher education increasingly means working with donors. Presidents, provosts, deans, directors, and other senior leaders are expected to devote more time and attention to fundraising. Outcomes can be highly consequential for institutions, programs, and individual careers. This course introduces the joy of fundraising to those in, or aspiring to, higher education leadership positions. Through lectures, readings, guest speakers, reflections, and role-play, it imparts the basics of fundraising particular to the postsecondary context. Practical topics include donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, as well as alumni relations, case statements, and campaigns. For a wider context, students will consider the history, tradition, and impact of philanthropy in higher education.
Student Populations & Experiences in Higher Education EDLPS 590 | 4 Credits | SLN: 13435 | 4 credits | Tuesdays, 4:30-6:50pm Instructor: Shirley Hune, Professor, UW College of Education Examines foundational literature dealing with students in higher education. Primary focus is on how students change during college, how they make choices and decisions, what roles institutional climate and structure play in the students' experiences, and what impact college has on students.
Globalization & Internationalization of Higher Education EDLPS 594 | 4 Credits | SLN: 13436 | Wednesdays, 4:30-6:50pm Instructor: Maresi Nerad, Associate Professor, UW College of Education
This class explores the impact of globalization on higher education, and the strategies used by higher education institutions to achieve internationalization. Students will study conceptual frameworks linking higher education institutions to economic competitiveness in a global economy and critically analyze recent local (UW) national and international initiatives and activities. One of this class’s foci will be on international students at the undergraduate and graduate level in the context of their home and host countries innovation and internationalization policies of their higher education sectors.
Assessment and Evaluation in Higher Education EDLPS 593 | 3 Credits | SLN: 20576 | Thursdays, 4:30-6:50pm Instructors: Dr. Joe Lott, Associate Professor & Jessica Salvador, Graduate Assistant at UW College of Education Covers the key components of evaluation design and implementation, particularly what researchers and practitioners define as good assessment and evaluation approaches. Develops competencies in planning assessment and evaluation strategies using these approaches. This course does have a pre-requisite that you identify a program within an organization/program that will be the focus for your evaluation design project in addition to having taken at least one research methods course (qualitative or quantitative).
