Seattle MESA Tutor Training Course Announcement

We are looking for engaging and motivated graduate and undergraduate students who want to make a difference to underrepresented youth in Seattle.  Starting this fall, you can begin your training to become a Seattle MESA math and science tutor for high school students.

WHAT IS THE SEATTLE MESA TUTOR TRAINING PROGRAM ALL ABOUT?
Seattle MESA provides opportunities and resources that inspire students traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields, to pursue education and careers in math, engineering and science (http://www.seattlemesa.org/).  We are offering a tutor training and certification for UW graduate and undergraduate students as well as community members to work with Seattle high school students in math and science.

WHO CAN TUTOR?
Engaging and motivated UW graduate and undergraduate students who want to work with high school students and have a commitment to diversity and inclusion.  We are looking for students who want training and experience working in local Seattle schools with a cohort of trained peers.

Seattle MESA Tutors must complete to following:

• Complete a Seattle MESA Introductory Tutoring Training Workshop (CENV 410).
• Attend a weekly seminar during their first quarter of tutoring (CENV 420 offered Autumn or Winter quarters).
• Tutor students once a week on site at a partner school during the afterschool program hours.
• Complete and pass the appropriate subject area test.
• Complete a background check through the Seattle Public Schools and follow UW volunteer guidelines.

HOW AND WHEN CAN I START?
Register now for the fall MESA Introductory Tutor Training Workshop (C ENV 410 Special Topics in the Fall Time Schedule). This is a 1 credit hour tutor skills and cultural competency training designed to get you ready to work one on one and in small groups with Seattle high school students in math. You will observe teachers and your students in their classrooms and complete a series of assignments and reflections.  There will be two workshops opportunities offered in fall quarter: one in October and the other in November. They meet three Wednesdays each:  Sept. 24, Oct.1 and 8 from 3-5 pm OR Nov 5,12,and 19 from 4-6pm.  All students must also be able to complete a classroom observation during the day at a local high school.

CAN SEATTLE MESA TUTORING COUNT TOWARDS MY MAJOR OR MINOR? Maybe!  Our tutoring training program coursework can fulfill the Field Experience requirement for the ELS minor <https://education.uw.edu/programs/undergraduate/els> and may be considered as credits towards the Diversity minor <http://depts.washington.edu/divminor/>.
