Globys 2013 internship opportunities
The Data Science Team at Seattle-based Globys Inc. is looking for motivated, energetic interns in machine learning to help shape our new flagship product for influencing the behavior of millions of mobile phone users in real time. (See below for Wall street Journal article about data science at Globys). We have an opening for the Globys Graduate Research Fellowship, which will pay one year of tuition and stipend at the graduate student's academic institution. We also have summer internships available to talented graduate and undergraduate students. All positions pay very competitive stipends.
Successful team members will be passionate about the mobile customer space and will have knowledge and experience in one or more of the following:
- Cutting-edge machine learning algorithms applied to social network analysis, unsupervised and supervised classification, dynamical graphical models, feature selection, and statistical signal processing.
- High-performance Python programming with large data sets.
- Conducting rigorous computer-based experiments to test hypotheses and discover new insights about mobile phone users.
- Visualizing, documenting and presenting the results at varying levels of granularity for both technical and less-technical audiences.
We welcome both theory-oriented and software-oriented applicants. You will have the opportunity to let your stuff shine and be mentored in the discipline of machine learning in the grown-up world of big data.
About Data Science at Globys:
You will work with senior-level machine learning scientists who combine advanced science with delivering business capabilities at large scale. Our scientists have worked at Bell Labs, Microsoft Research, the UW-Applied Physics Lab, and well-known area startup companies like INRIX; and come from diverse fields such as automatic music identification, underwater acoustics, computational finance, quantum computing, machine vision, and computational drug discovery. We draw from these experiences and apply cutting-edge technologies from pattern recognition, behavioral clustering, social network analysis, and statistical signal processing at big data-scale to transform the way wireless companies interact with their customers. Read more about data science at Globys on the Wall Street Journal:
Students may send resumes and cover letters to lcazzanti@globys.com. We also accept nominations from faculty advisors for outstanding students.

First Fridays at the CTL: Teaching and Professional Development Workshops for Graduate Students
"But you're just the TA!": Strategies for Dealing with Challenging Student Interactions
The CTL is happy to announce our next First Fridays workshop for graduate students on April 5th, 12:30-1:30pm in Gerberding Hall Suite 100.
Teaching is a hard job, and graduate students face particular
challenges as teachers and teaching assistants, ranging from grade
complaints to students challenging our authority in the classroom. In
this workshop, we will role-play to develop concrete strategies for
addressing challenging and awkward moments when we interact with
students in the classroom, office hours, and email.
Facilitated by: Ariel Wetzel, a Ph.D. candidate in English literature. She teaches both writing and literature, and has been fielding awkward conversations with students for over five years as a graduate instructor.

Looking for 2 more credits? Join the Dream Project (EDUC 260 and EDUC 369)
Most of you have likely heard of the Dream Project at some
point--you’ve probably seen our lawn signs or your roommate has been a
mentor. Maybe you’ve been meaning to join but never fit it into your
schedule. Now’s the time!
We would love to have you join us this spring as we begin working with a brand new cohort of mentees. In a few weeks, we’ll be pairing undergrads like you with low-income high school juniors in local high schools to get them inspired about college, guide them on signing up and preparing for the SAT/ACT, help them plan what colleges to apply to in the fall, and start applying to scholarships. In the words of a recent Dream Project mentee who is now a UW freshman, “You never know what conversation with a student is going to totally change their life trajectory.”
Other than a transformative leadership experience, resume building, great new friends, and the knowledge that you made a difference in students’ lives, what’s in it for you?
If you don’t want credit, you can have the exact same experience participating on a volunteer basis. For details about how to register, see www.dreamproject.org/register, email us at uwdreamproject@uw.edu or stop by the Dream Project Center in Mary Gates 274. We welcome students of all majors or premajors, freshmen through super-senior, who are interested in becoming mentors.
