Abstract
This talk focuses on two case studies of doing science in the cloud.
The first is large scale simulations of the dynamics of a transmembrane protein that is a frequent target of drug therapies. The second case study addresses brain simulations and the challenges in developing biologically meaningful computational models. The case studies are used to identify issues with current approaches to computational discovery and productive directions for future research.
Biography:
Joseph L. Hellerstein manages the Computational Discovery Department at Google Inc. in Seattle, WA. Dr. Hellerstein received the PhD in computer science from the University of California at Los Angeles. He was a Principal Architect at Microsoft Corp. in Redmond, WA (USA) from 2006 to 2008, and a researcher and senior manager at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Hawthorne, NY from 1984 to 2006. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and two books, and has taught at Columbia University and the University of Washington. Dr. Hellerstein is a Fellow of the IEEE.
