DOE-Sponsored National Laboratories Professional Development Workshop for Underrepresented Participants

June 14-15, 2012 at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

It is recognized that students and professionals can greatly benefit from mentoring activities to be successful in their professional endeavors.  This is especially the case for students and professionals in the area of computational science from underrepresented groups for which the numbers are very low.

To address this issue, we are developing a pilot professional development workshop focused on senior graduate students and post-docs, and laboratory professional junior staff from underrepresented groups in the area of computational science.  In particular, the focus is on the following underrepresented groups:
  • African Americans
  • Hispanics
  • Native Americans
  • People with Disabilities

The Department of Energy ASCR program is funding the pilot workshop with support for 25 participants.  The workshop will include an overview of the research activities at the different national laboratories; panels on navigating the professional ladder, professionalism and leadership, and effective strategies for underrepresented research staff.  In addition, the workshop will include detailed discussions about effective communications, effective teams, and value creation for proposals.

The application deadline is 10 April 2012.  Applicants will be notified by 1 May 2012.

Applicants should apply by clicking on this link: https://apply2.cse.tamu.edu/gts/NatLabDevWorkshop/applicant/   to create a login/password; then login and enter the application information.
