Summer Internships in Medical Imaging at the University of Washington IRL

Students needed for Summer 2015.

Are you looking for an opportunity to put your engineering, physics, math, or computer skills to work while gaining valuable real-world experience? Do you have an interest in gaining knowledge and
experience in imaging technologies?

The Imaging Research Laboratory (IRL) at the University of Washington is a multidisciplinary collaborative environment that focuses on medical imaging modalities that use ionizing radiation. Our goal is to improve the imaging of cancerous lesions by developing novel technologies and creating new analysis and evaluation tools.

Work with World-Class Research Leaders.
Our faculty are recognized leaders in the fields of nuclear medicine and medical imaging. The Imaging Research Laboratory has made significant contributions to these fields, with numerous publications and innovations that are implemented in industry.

Increase Your Educational Experience.
In addition to the hands-on experience mentored by one of our worldclass faculty, our summer interns have access to various educational seminars given in our lab. Our mini-courses include medical imaging physics, signal processing, image reconstruction, computer programming, electronics, and others.

Contact Us.
To apply to the IRL 2015 Summer Internship Program, send a resume and cover letter with a list of relevant courses that you have taken to

Summer 2015 Internships:
Projects are available for undergraduate and graduate students alike. There is no minimum skill level, and internships can last just for the summer term, or up to one year, depending on the project.

Current projects include:
• Multi-Resolution Imaging Physics
• Computer Programming
• Medical Informatics
• And more to come!

Hands-On Experience
Our internship program has included projects for both undergraduate and graduate students alike.

Notable internship accomplishments from previous years include:
  • Using a kinect device to track patient motion while in a scanner to improve medical images
  • Creating a database of mammograms to aid in data mining for the design of next-gen breast imaging devices
  • Building a camera to measure the characteristics of radioactive sources for improved detection
Apply Now!
The deadline for applications for the Summer 2015 IRL internship program is April 15, 2015. Announcements regarding acceptance to the program will be made May 15, 2015. Visit our website or send an email inquiry with any questions regarding the Summer 2015 internship program at the Imaging Research Laboratory. We look forward to hearing from you!

EE 529 Semiconductor Optoelectronics

Spring 2015  Tu/Th 12:30-2:20
Instructor: Lih Y. Lin

The 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics was dedicated to the invention of blue LEDs, which is one of the topics this course will cover. Another topic, laser, was another invention that led to a Nobel Prize. Photonics and optoelectronics has profoundly influenced our life, and the impact continues. In this course, we plan to cover the following topics. The class will include homework and a final project.

Optical Processes in Semiconductors
- 0-D, 1-D, and 2-D materials
- Electron-hole pair generation
- Transition probability in electron-photon interaction
- Absorption coefficient
- Various absorption mechanisms
- Relationship between absorption and emission

Light Emitting Diodes
- P-N junction
- LED principles, structures and overall efficiency
- Emission spectrum and photon output
- Frequency response and modulation bandwidth

Optical Waveguides
- Modes in planar waveguides
- Ray-optic approach
- Electromagnetic wave approach
- Modes in rectangular waveguides

Photodetectors and Solar Cells
- Photoconductors
- Junction photodiodes
- Avalanche photodiodes
- Solar cells

Lasers: Operating Principles
- Emission, absorption and gain in a two-level system
- Emission, absorption and gain in a semiconductor
- Laser cavity and lasing threshold conditions
- Laser mode structures

Lasers: Structures and Properties
- Threshold current and power output
- Heterojunction lasers
- DFB lasers and coupled-mode theory
- Other laser structures
- Modulation of lasers

Lavender Graduation Committee - Volunteer Opportunity

The Q Center and Queer Student Commission (QSC) host Lavender Graduation as a time for the UW queer, trans*, two-spirit, same gender loving, and allied communities to come together and celebrate our multiple identities, our accomplishments, and sheer AWESOMENESS.

We are currently seeking volunteers who are interested in serving on the planning committee.  Typically, the time commitment consists of a 1-hour meeting every other week, which will change to weekly meetings closer to the event or as needed.  We also ask that committee members attend and volunteer the day of the ceremony.

This year's Lavender Graduation will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 9th, 2015 from 6:00 - 8:30PM @ the UW Tower Mezzanine Level Lounge.

If you are looking for a way to get involved/stay connected with the Q Center, meet people, and share your ideas to make Lavender Graduation even more phenomenal than it already is, then the planning committee is for you!
