Learn how to harness the power of business to affect lasting change in developing economies! The first of its kind in Seattle, this workshop will provide students a foundational understanding of global social entrepreneurship in developing countries and outline the process of turning an idea into a viable business.
The workshop will provide a forum to train students, enable the exchange of ideas, and network for UW competitions like the Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition (GSEC) and Business Plan Competition (BPC) opportunities. Open to all students!
Experts from regional organizations - such as Ashoka Seattle, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Literacy Bridge, PATH, Social Venture Partners, and Village Reach - will provide practical guidance on how to create sustainable social ventures in developing economies through interactive sessions on marketing, management, law, and funding. Particular focus will be given to global health and technology.

Why Participate?
GSEC is the place for students to learn about harnessing the power of commercial strategies to reduce poverty and affect positive social change in developing economies.
Each year, 15-20 semi-finalist student teams worldwide are selected from the applicant pool, paired with mentors and are invited to participate in GSEC Week, February 27 - March 2, 2012, in Seattle, WA. Throughout the process - from application to GSEC Week - students receive expert guidance, refine their business skills, develop their networks, and gain access to new resources.
GSEC Week teams present to 400+ professionals and compete for monetary prizes, awarded to teams that develop businesses with the most innovative solutions to problems of poverty and the best integration of financial and social returns on investment.
In 2012, GSEC will award $30,000 in prizes, including: grand, global health, and Information & Communication Technologies (ICT).

2011 UW EE New Student Orientation on September 26th
Welcome to UW Electrical Engineering! Our undergraduate advising team is looking forward to working with you as you progress through your EE degree. We are here to answer your questions and help you find the resources you need to be successful.
***The Electrical Engineering New Student Orientation for all 2011 newly admitted students, will be on September 26th from 10:00am - 12:30pm in room EEB 125 - and lunch is included! You will have a chance to meet the EE Department Chair, the Associate Chair for Education, your advising team, representatives from student groups, the Engineering Coop/Intern office, Undergraduate Research Program and more. Missile Defense Agency Hiring Entry-Level Engineers
Missile Defense Agency (MDA) is anticipating the hire of 70 engineers in 2012
for their Missile Defense Career Development Program (MDCDP). MDA is
anticipating hiring 35 entry level engineers (all degree levels with
degree prior to 31 Dec 2011) with a February 13, 2012 start date. MDA
plans to hire 35 more entry level engineers with a start date in June
2012 (all degree levels with degree prior to 31 May 2012) .

Do you dream of making a bigger impact with your work? ENVIR 500A will focus
on developing practical skills for expressing your ideas clearly and
memorably. This class aims to transform anxieties about writing into
excitement, and to help students learn to write with impact about topics in
their field.
In-class activities include lecture and discussion, writing exercises,
analysis, guest speakers and work-shopping of assigned writings. The class
is about learning-by-doing. Frequent guest-speakers will help inspire and
motivate students by sharing about the role communication has played in
their success.
Students will keep a daily learning journal, write essays, blogs, Op Eds and
a one-page research proposal. Topics will center on the students� own work
and interests. Students will work with the instructor to publish select
assigned writings.
Instructed by Stacie Solie, a freelance editor and print journalist

New Venture Investing Course Offered in Fall
What is venture investing? You hear all the time about these young companies that raise millions of dollars. In Seattle recently, Zulilly raised $43 million, Contour (a UW student-led company!) raised $5 million, and Decide raised $8.5 million. But what does the venture investing process look like�from both the entrepreneur�s and the investor�s point of view?
By registering now for ENTRE 490 Venture Investing, you can learn how to screen, evaluate (perform due diligence), analyze, and make recommendations on opportunities for investment. And you can apply that knowledge to real deals coming out of the University of Washington and other innovation institutions.

Seeking participants for eye tracking security study
You are invited to participate in research on a new secure login technique based on eye tracking!
The study will take about an hour and you'll get to use an eye tracking machine.
In appreciation for your help, we will enter you into a drawing for one of two $25 Amazon.com gift cards.

The purpose of this research is to test the new biometric security system.
This system uses eye tracking technology to uniquely identify individuals, similar to a fingerprint or signature.
If you decide to participate, we will schedule an appointment with you in Sieg Hall at the University of Washington.
The appointment will last about 1 hour. You will use the eye tracking machine to test the performance of the security system.
You will also complete a questionnaire and short interview about the experience.
If you are over 18 and sighted, you may be eligible to participate.
Unfortunately if you have been involved in one of our prior studies, you cannot participate in this study.
This study is being conducted in the Department of Human Centered Design and Engineering at the University of Washington, Seattle campus.
Your participation in this research is voluntary, and you are free to refuse to participate or quit the experiment at any time without loss of benefits.
