Scholarship deadlines in January

Due Jan. 10, 2011: Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Arts Award - for graduating seniors or alumni (graduated since 2006) with significant financial need and who plan to begin graduate studies in fall 2011 in creative and performing arts, creative writing, industrial design, radio, TV, film and other creative/arts fields. This award provides up to $50,000/year for up to 3 years of graduate study. UW is able to nominate 2 students per year to compete for this national award. To be considered for UW nomination, applicants must apply by the Jan. 10, 2011 campus deadline. Due Jan. 11, 2011: Boren Scholarship - for US citizen undergraduate students at all levels in all fields planning to study abroad during 2011-2012, with language study being part of the study abroad plans. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad. Applicants must meet UW's campus deadline of Jan. 11, 2011. Due Jan. 11, 2011: Beinecke Scholarship - for undergraduate students with financial need who plan to graduate between December 2011 and August 2012 (current "juniors") and who plan enter a graduate program in arts, humanities or social science fields after graduation. This scholarship program provides up to $34,000 toward graduate studies. UW is able to nominate one student per year to compete for this national award. To be considered for UW nomination, applicants must complete the campus application by Jan. 11, 2011. Applicants must be US citizens, or US nationals from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Due Jan. 12, 2011: Knowles Science Teaching Foundation Teaching Fellowships - for those interested in teaching high school math, physical or biological sciences and are admitted or are planning to be admitted into a teacher education program by June, 2011. The program supports fellows professionally and financially for up to five years through a teacher preparation program to eligibility for tenure. Due Jan. 18, 2011: Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) Undergraduate Fellowship - for US citizen or permanent resident undergraduate students at all levels and in all fields who plan to study a language intensively during summer 2011 or during the 2011-2012 academic year. French, German and Spanish are not eligible languages, but most other languages are supported. Students must be applying for language study at the intermediate or advanced levels (i.e. students may not apply for this scholarship to support their first year of language study). Due Jan. 18, 2011: Samuel Huntington Public Service Award - for graduating seniors who plan to pursue one year of public service anywhere in the world after graduation. UW Environmental Innovation Challenge-$$$ for Prototype! Application Due Dec 12

UW Environmental Innovation Challenge – Prototype Funding Due Sunday, December 12!
WE HAVE A CHALLENGE FOR YOU.
If you’ve got a passion for clean-tech, the smarts to play in the emerging green economy, and the desire to leverage your engineering background to make an impact, the UW Environmental Innovation Challenge can provide just the platform (and the funding!) you’ve been looking for.

HOW IT WORKS
For the UW EIC, interdisciplinary student teams will define a clean-tech problem, design and develop the solution, and work together to produce both a prototype (or proof of concept or computer simulation) and a business summary that outlines the market opportunity.
We have $25,000 available for prototype funding. In the Challenge on March 31, 2011, students will pitch their concepts and demonstrate their product/idea to a group of judges that includes technologists, entrepreneurs, and investors. Teams are judged on their prototypes, business summaries, and potential for impact. The grand prize is $10,000.

HOW DO YOU GET FUNDING?
The College of Engineering has provided $25,000 to help teams develop their prototypes. The deadline for funding applications is midnight December 12, 2010! You can use this funding for purchasing materials to build your prototype, renting equipment, purchasing safety equipment, and hiring short-term work beyond your team’s capacity. (You cannot pay team members).

We prefer to see requests between $1,500 and $4,500 but will consider both smaller and larger amounts. Funding will be announced by January 4, 2011 and is to be used by March 31, 2011. Any unspent development money must be returned. Who can apply? Any team with at least one engineering student can apply, but the application must be submitted by the engineering student(s). Please note: teams that receive funding agree to participate in the Challenge March 31.

STEM Diversity Career Expo

On February 24^th, 2011 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 S. Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, Ca., EOP, Inc. is hosting our STEM Diversity Career Expo for minorities, women, people with disabilities & wounded warriors in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math career fields.

We would very much appreciate your help in making this event available to your college students, graduates, and alumni by informing them that they can pre-register for the STEM Diversity Career Expo online at www.eop.com/stemexpo and attaching their resume.

Their resume will be included in a CD Disk which will be given to all of the exhibitors at the show two weeks after the event even if they are unable to attend.

Scholarship for study abroad in Asia ($3000-$7000)

The Institute of International Education (IIE) is pleased to announce that it will re-launch the Freeman-ASIA Program with a generous grant from the Freeman Foundation. Applications can be submitted online starting in January 2011 for study abroad beginning in Summer 2011. Freeman-ASIA scholarships will be available for study abroad anytime through the 2012-13 academic year, with application deadlines listed on the program website.

Freeman-ASIA provides financial support to American undergraduates with demonstrated financial need to study abroad for academic credit during the summer, semester or academic year in one of 15 countries/regions in East and Southeast Asia. Award amounts vary from $3,000 - $7,000 depending on the length of study.

The program's goal is to increase the number of Americans with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures. Upon their return to the U.S., students are required to promote study in Asia by sharing their experiences with peers on their home campuses and in their communities.

University Disciplinary Committee Membership

It’s that time of year again where we seek students who are interested in serving on the University Disciplinary Committee. Commitment to serve on the committee runs from January through December of 2011. Students should be in good academic standing and should be interested in gaining leadership skills through serving on this University Wide Committee.

The University Disciplinary committee is comprised of students and faculty who have the ability to hear disciplinary cases on behalf of the university. Students who have allegedly violated the Student Conduct Code can appear before the University Disciplinary Committee or to have an informal hearing with one hearing officer. Additionally the UDC hears appeals of case in which a student may have been found responsible for a violation of the code but the student has a disagreement with the initial finding or sanctions.

Students are selected at random from those students who identify an interest in the University Disciplinary Committee and then training is provided for those selected.

Student Position with Educational Outreach

UW International Educational Outreach is looking for a student Immigration and Activities Assistant. The primary unit to be served is the English Language Programs, assisting and reporting to the Student Services and Immigration Advisors. We are a busy office, serving over 600 international students per quarter. We’re looking for someone who: has an interest in working with international students; is able to work both independently and as part of a team; and is able to handle a complex and busy work environment.

Position responsibilities:

· Help plan and implement student activities and events; independently serve as contact and facilitator for events

· Update all student contact information changes with registration office and in immigration database

· Assist with the creation and maintenance of international student immigration files

· General administrative support, including: making copies, files, printing file labels, filing, receptionist coverage, creating correspondence, information packets, certificates, data compilation, data entry

· Assist the Student Services and Immigration Advisors as needed

Dates: Start as soon as possible; continue at least 1 year

Hours: Must work 16 to 19.5 hours per week, spread over four or five days a week

Position qualifications and requirements:

· An outgoing personality and a strong interest in student services

· Able to think on feet, ready to adapt to changes and situations as they come up

· Event planning experience

· Experience studying a second language, living or studying abroad and/or interacting with international students in the U.S.

· Interest in cross-cultural communication

· Highly developed organizational skills

· Familiarity with MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel

· Fluent English speaker

· Citizen or Resident Immigrant of the U.S. Required for working with government immigration database

· Familiarity with fax machines, email, and copying machines in a business setting

· Able to work in a fast-paced environment, be flexible, and have a sense of humor

· Able to follow directions and clarify procedures, perform tasks with accuracy and attention to detail, and follow through on tasks assigned

· Work on occasional evenings or weekends to lead student activities

· Currently enrolled as a UW student

· Possess valid drivers license and good driving record

Public Service/Social Justice Scholarships

• The Grinnell College Young Innovator for Social Justice Prize (open to anyone under the age of 40)

The Samuel Huntington Public Service Award provides a $10,000 stipend for a graduating college senior to pursue one year of public service anywhere in the world. The award allows recipients to engage in a meaningful public service activity for one year before proceeding on to graduate school or a career. This competition is open to all graduating students from accredited colleges (US citizenship is NOT required of applicants, but they must be graduating from a US institution). Awards will be based on the quality of the proposal, academic record, and other personal achievements. Semi-finalists will be personally interviewed prior to selection of the award recipient(s). Up to three individuals will be honored annually. Each prize carries an award of $100,000, half to the winning individual and half to an organization committed to the winner
